Energy hardship is widespread in Kiwi households

Mould and damp not just a problem for low-income households

This report looks at indicators of energy wellbeing in Aotearoa New Zealand. What initially started as a short article on damp and cold in Kiwi homes, required a closer look at the numbers. What this report finds is that many Kiwi homes are not providing adequate protection in winter, and even high-income households are exhibiting poor energy wellbeing. Most worryingly, homes with children are the most likely to be too cold during winter.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is undertaking mahi to define energy hardship in Aotearoa. The outcome of this project will point towards a problem that is persistent and widespread, and it will take significant effort and investment from the government and homeowners to fix it.
