Autumn 2022

Special feature: migration

After growing by three percent in the December 2021 quarter, there are signs that the economy may be heading for a slowdown. Activity has not picked up in 2022 at the pace that was expected at the beginning of the year. Instead, businesses and consumers are increasingly pessimistic against the backdrop of high inflation and capacity constraints. This quarter, we look at how the domestic economy has been holding up in the first half of 2022, and how our major trade partners are faring.

The special feature in this edition is migration. After two long years of close to total isolation, the borders are finally opening. The pandemic has reversed some long-standing migration trends, which are starting to revert back to the pre-pandemic norm. However, the recently announced ‘immigration rebalance’ will play a major role in shaping our future population.
