Hugh joined BERL in 2010 after having spent seven years working for Statistics New Zealand as a senior analyst and project leader.  In his time at Statistics New Zealand, Hugh worked on both economic and social statistics projects.  Hugh’s interest is in the external trade sector, and he completed post-graduate study on the economic impacts of freer trade between New Zealand and South East Asia.

Hugh writes the international trade section of BERL’s Birds Eye View.  He also conducts a lot of data research and analysis, and applies that knowledge to economic impact assessments and other projects.  Here, his experience in economics and social statistics, allows Hugh to see the bigger picture in the numbers he is working with.

Hugh works on regional profiles, economic impact assessments, industry workforce scenarios, and economic projections for local governments, along with providing technical support for other staff members.  Hugh is our resident Excel, GIS and database expert.  He also builds and populates economic and data models, not only for the BERL, but for our clients.

In his spare time, Hugh enjoys baking goodies for his workmates, and playing football and strategy games.
