Dairy farmers riding the milk pay-out roller-coaster

The Fonterra Annual Review 2013, which was published alongside its Annual Report on 24 September 2014, confirmed that 2013/14 had been a bumper season, with a final pay-out of $8.40/kg of milk solids. However, at the same time it forecast a pay-out of just $5.30/kg of milk solids for the 2014/15 season.

The Physiotherapy Workforce

Physiotherapy is a registered health profession in New Zealand.  To practise, physiotherapists are required to have a physiotherapy bachelor degree or equivalent, be registered with the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand, and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC).

Residential building consents improving

The 12-month running total for residential building consents stood at 23,975 in August 2014.  Year-on-year, residential building consents were up 23 percent with consents for residential housing in Canterbury, Auckland, Otago and the Waikato leading the way.  Annualised totals, as shown in the figure below, indicate that consents could potentially go back to the 26,000 mark seen in August 2007, and are well ahead of the 13,500 consents witnessed in the 12 months to August 2011.

Good news in the detail of migration numbers

The overall picture of net permanent and long-term migration is playing out very much as we have commented for some time. The main driver of the wide cyclical fluctuations in the past has been changes in the numbers of New Zealand residents leaving, particularly for Australia. Two years ago the outflow to Australia was 56,000. This outflow has dropped and is quite flat at about 30,000 a year.
